Challenges Facing Immigrants and How You Can Help
St. Mary’s Social Justice Committee will be hosting guest speaker Sylvie Bisangwa, Policy Advocate at the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota Wednesday, February 6 at 6:30 PM to discuss challenges facing immigrants and how you can help.
Did you know Minnesota is home to the largest Somali, Karen and Oromo populations in the U.S. and second largest Hmong community. These immigrants are earners, consumers, taxpayers, entrepreneurs and valuable members of our community who make Minnesota richer and more diverse culturally, linguistically, etc. In this presentation you will discover Minnesota immigration history, various types of status immigrants hold, main challenges faced and what that means for them and their family. Join us and learn how you can help!
Sylvie Bisangwa previously worked for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, and Senegal. She has worked in various capacities for UNHCR for six years, but primarily in refugee resettlement. Graduated from the University of Wisconsin law school and from the University of Texas at Austin with degrees in Communication and Government.
