Family Resource Guide
We encourage you to read the Family Resource Packet before and during your times of service so you can understand some background of Social Justice work in the Church! Decide why it’s important to serve others.
Theological Reflection
At the end of each service day work on something from the Theological Reflection page with your family. There are discussion questions and reflection activities that you should complete as a family which will help the Confirmation candidate as they log their Hands from Home works of mercy.
Instructions:
- Each Confirmation candidate and their family should complete THREE corporal works of mercy and THREE spiritual works of mercy by April 1, 2026. Sponsors should participate in at least one of these works of mercy with their candidate. We suggest you do one a month to stay on track. Follow the steps below for each work of mercy:
- With your family (and sponsor if you can include them), select which work of mercy you are going to focus on that day and the specific action you are going to take to complete it.
- Using the Family Resource Guide, go through the steps of the “Family Group Preparation” and any additional information that may be helpful.
- Begin by watching the video for that work of mercy, which includes an opening prayer and a reflection on the life of a saint who lived it out.
- Complete the service opportunity itself.
- Use the Theological Reflection Guide to process and discuss as a family after you finish your service.
- Candidates, complete the Hands from Home log. Each candidate should submit this for every different work of mercy they complete as a family, so by the end candidates will have submitted the form six times. You are always welcome to do more service and submit the form even more times!
Note: Please remember that the service projects listed below are suggestions! Feel free to be creative with the ways you choose to perform your works of mercy. All service projects should be done in a way that is safe for all parties involved.
Corporal Works of Mercy
The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They “are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs” (United States Catholic Catechism for Adults – USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. These are physical (corporal) ways that we can help others.
FEED THE HUNGRY
There are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider how good stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit others who do not have those same resources.

Service Project Ideas
Donate Canned Foods to your parish or a local food pantry
Give food to a homeless person
Make “Blessing Bags” to keep in your car and handout to those in need (suggestions below)
Pay for the person behind you in the drive-through
Bring meals to someone who is sick, just had a baby, or a neighbor who cannot get out of their house
Set the table, do the dishes, or help cook dinner for your family
Go shopping & deliver food to someone
Decorate reusable grocery bags and stuff them with nonperishable food items to donate to a food pantry
Send a surprise pizza or food to a family or fire station

*Do not put soap in the bag as any food items will take on its taste
*Put in snacks that are easy on people without strong teeth. Do not put in things like candy or granola bars, sticky items or anything that will melt.

GIVE DRINK TO THE THIRSTY
Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this basic necessity. We should support the efforts of those working towards greater accessibility of this essential resource.

Service Project Ideas
Donate water to shelters, a local police/fire station, or an organization collecting for an emergency situation
Offer to get drinks for your friends or family members
Run a lemonade stand and donate the profits, or just give the drinks away for free
Leave drinks or a snack out on your porch in a basket for the people who make deliveries to your home. You can add a Bible verse or a letter of encouragement to the snacks!
Pay for the person in the drive-thru behind you
Tip extra at any restaurant.
Hand out water bottles with encouraging messages at your local walking trail (as a family, during the daytime, in a safe and friendly way)

SHELTER THE HOMELESS
There are many circumstances that could lead to someone becoming a person without a home. Christ encourages us to go out and meet those without homes, affirming their worth and helping them seek a resolution to the challenges they face.

Service Project Ideas
Volunteer or fundraise for organizations that build homes for people
Donate old furniture, pillows, blankets, etc. to those that need it
Know where safe places are and tell people about them (look up numbers for shelters and domestic abuse centers)
Lend a neighbor your tools
Pay a hotel room for someone who needs it, or help pay someone’s rent
Turn plastic bags into “yarn” to be used to crochet plastic mats for the homeless (see details below)
Put donation box in your church to collect plastic bags and create a group that makes yarn and can crochet the plastic mats
Follow on social media or donate to organizations that help end homelessness.
Plastic Mat Information
Often homeless people do not have dry ground to lie on. They also struggle carrying around their possessions. Plastic bag mats are lightweight, create a dry space to lay down, dry easily and reduce plastic waste! Find videos on YouTube or Google PDF of instructions.

VISIT THE SICK
Those who are sick are often forgotten or avoided. In spite of their illness, these individuals still have much to offer to those who take the time to visit and comfort them.

Service Project Ideas
Ask a priest to visit a sick person and perform the Anointing of the Sick
Find someone to bring the sick Communion
Make a card, call on the phone or zoom someone who is sick, especially if they are stuck at home or in the hospital
Gift items that will help a sick person like pillows, games, books, etc. (If they are in a hospital check with the hospital first)
Bring someone who is sick a home-cooked meal (use proper safety precautions)
Help the sick with their medicine or even help pay their medical bills
Be extra nice to your own family members when they are sick

VISIT THE IMPRISONED
People in prison are still people, made in the image and likeness of God. No matter what someone has done, they deserve the opportunity to hear the Word of God and find the Truth of the message of Christ.

Encourage your priest or deacon to visit someone in prison, pending Diocesan and Prison rules.
Send cards to or call people who are homebound, hospitalized or in residential care
Cook for someone who is homebound

BURY THE DEAD
Funerals give us the opportunity to grieve and show others support during difficult times. Through our prayers and actions during these times we show our respect for life, which is always a gift from God, and comfort to those who mourn.

Attend funerals & visitations
Pick-up trash at a local cemetery
Send cards and flowers to grieving family
Make food for a family who has suffered a loss
Visit a gravesite to pray, put out flowers, flags, etc.

Help pay bills related to funeral expenses. (Cantor stipends, church donations, reception, etc.)

CLOTHE THE NAKED
Donate new needed clothing or money to organizations that have the ability to provide support and services for those in need. “Clothing” means more than just the “shirt on your back.” Do research and find organizations that put people in need first, rather than profit.

Clean out your closet and donate to an organization or a family that you know
Donate suitcases and duffle bags to CPS for foster children

Spiritual Works of Mercy
The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to “help our neighbor in their spiritual needs” (United States Catholic Catechism for Adults – USCCA).
COUNSEL THE DOUBTFUL
Everyone has moments of doubt in their faith journey. Nevertheless, we should always remember that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and turn to him along our way.

Adopt-a-Senior
Chalk Morale Boosters (write encouraging messages on the sidewalk)
Paint rocks with uplifting messages and leave them in parks near your house
Willingly explain things
Write an encouragement card for someone who might need it, especially someone elderly or lonely
Share why you have hope (Call or visit a friend or neighbor who may be depressed or doubtful)
Encourage someone to talk to an expert, like a priest, teacher, counselor, etc.

Give people more time-don’t rush them
If you are good at something, be willing to teach that skill to others.
Share helpful tips on your social media in a polite way
Be willing to tell stories that you know about the Bible, the Saints, the Church, etc.
Talk about your Faith (read a bible story to a neighbor or friend or younger family member)
Don’t think you are better than someone else because of your knowledge. Don’t be prideful or arrogant when you know something.
Apologize to someone you may have belittled
Help someone to learn a new skill without boasting about your knowhow. Teach by example.
Engage in meaningful conversations. Think about your voice and your language. Is that online comment actually helping someone or are you just trying to shame them?

Kindly and privately talk to a person with whom you have a problem
Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation
Lead people towards the best choice in a situation
Stop a problem before it happens
Consider the causes and effects of problems
Remember that even little things are a big deal (for example, even cursing or fighting with your siblings are actions that are pulling them away from Christ) and make a resolution to practice the opposite virtue when you are tempted (i.e. say a prayer for your sibling every time you want to fight).

COMFORT THE SORROWFUL
Be open to listening and comforting those who are dealing with grief. Even if we aren’t sure of the right words to say, our presence can make a big difference.

Send encouraging letters to a nursing home, hospital, community helper, first responder, etc. (Be sure that nursing homes are accepting mail first.)
Create encouraging yard signs and get permission to put them in your neighbor’s yards

Offer comfort by baking cookies, making a meal, sending a card
Call or visit someone who is sad. Spend time and pray with them.
Do things that bring joy to another person.

Forgiving others is difficult at times because we do not have God’s limitless mercy and compassion. But Jesus teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying on him to help us show others the mercy of God.

At home rosary making (check with your parish for these supplies if needed)
Pray a Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Holy Hour, Novena or other prayer for a specific person (living or deceased)
Pray with people who are going through hard times
Ask your friends how you can pray for them and say a prayer immediately, instead of waiting for later.
Memorize the “Eternal rest” prayer and pray it for those who have died
Pray any of the prayers listed below
Pray when you drive past a cemetery (remember the “Sign of the Cross” is a prayer)
